Prescribing Safe and Effective Toileting and Bathing Solutions for People with Complex Mobility Needs

Safe toileting and bathing require more than choosing the right product. They require a structured assessment that considers posture, transfers, support needs, skin integrity, caregiver safety, and the client’s daily routines.

In this recorded CAOT webinar, Sandy Alexander and Alli Speight walk through a practical framework for assessing and prescribing toileting and bathing solutions for people with complex mobility needs.

The session explores everything from basic toilet and tub/shower use to advanced mobile shower commode chair prescriptions. You’ll learn how to evaluate transfer methods, support placement, product features, and positioning needs to improve safety, independence, and dignity.

Key topics include postural control, tilt, recline, anterior tilt, skin protection, caregiver ergonomics, and how to reduce risk during transfers and personal care routines. Through real-world client scenarios, Sandy and Alli show how a thoughtful assessment can lead to tailored solutions that support both current and future needs.

This session was originally presented by Sandy Alexander and Alli Speight at the 2025 Canadian Seating and Mobility Conference in Toronto.  We were subsequently asked to prepare it as a CAOT Webinar which was recorded. We then presented this same workshop at the CSMC East in Moncton in April 2026.
