SuperPole vs uPole: A Comparison of Clinical Features

How are these floor-to-ceiling transfer poles similar?

1. Support Exactly Where You Need It

Both the SuperPole and uPole install exactly where support is needed in any room.  They provide ultimate flexibility in placement because no wall is needed.  It is a secure tension fit between floor and ceiling and no drilling is required. Whether beside a bed, tub, or favorite living room chair, it puts a grab bar exactly where you need it.

2. Two-Hands of Support

Both the SuperPole and uPole offer two widely spaced points of contact to create a broad base of stability to improve balance, postural symmetry, and provide control during transfers. Every part of the SuperPole with SuperBar or the uPole with Pivot Baris designed for secure gripping, without encountering jack screws, moving sleeves, or obstructions wherever you place your hands.  Only the SuperBar can be set to the exact height to perfectly match your needs.

3. Support Positioned in Front

Both the SuperPole and uPole intentionally provide support in front of the body—where it’s needed most—to encourage natural movement patterns during sit-to-stand transitions. Because standing requires a forward weight shift, any support placed behind the body must be abandoned as you rise, eliminating continuous contact when balance is most vulnerable. Front-facing support allows for continuous contact, enhancing stable movement, and reducing fall risk.

4. Support that Moves to the Right Position and Locks

Both the SuperBar and uPole Pivot Bar offer the patented Pivot and Lock Technology which has been trusted for over 30 years by occupational therapists and healthcare professionals. The same trusted technology is built into other products like the wall-mounted Dependa-Bar, and the floor-mounted Advantage Rail.

The pivoting support bar locks every 45° to provide strong fixed support through every step of a transfer. Especially when moving from one surface to another, the bar provides consistent and safe support at multiple angles for confident movement.

5. Effortless Pivoting Bar

Both the SuperBar and the Pivot Bar move easily. Just lift and pivot with a finger, forearm, or light touch of one hand.  Works great for people with weak hands or paralysis, limited finger dexterity or grip strength as there are no buttons or pull pins to manipulate.

While pivoting the bar with one hand, you stay supported thanks to the sturdy vertical pole that offers continuous stable contact for the other hand or the body.  More stability, at all times, even when pivoting the bar.

6. Reduces Strain on Caregivers

Back and shoulder injuries are a leading cause of caregiver strain during transfers and mobility assistance. A stable support like the SuperPole, allows individuals to participate more actively in repositioning, standing, and transfers, reducing the need for hands-on physical support from caregivers. This decreases the biomechanical demands placed on caregivers and helps lower the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

How are these floor-to-ceiling transfer poles different?

7. Mid-Body Support

Both offer mid-body support that frees your hands for the tasks that naturally require two—buttoning pants, fastening a belt, washing hands, brushing teeth, or reaching into a closet or drawer. The horizontal bar supports the body, so that the hands are free to function. Here is where the SuperPole and uPole offer unique features.

The uPole offers the 14” wide u-shaped Pivot Bar that offers two rails to give maximum support to the pelvis for balance and real-life function in standing. The Pivot Bar aligns with average waist heights, allowing you to lean with confidence.

The SuperPole offers the 16” wide SuperBar which can be customized and set to align with your specific waist height if you fall outside the average height range.  It also has a latex-free closed cell foam to offer extra slip-resistance when leaning.

8. Better Grasp, Better Control

The power grip  of the human hand  (thumb + fingers wrapping) is strongest around round bars 1.25” – 1.50” in diameter. That is because the pressure is distributed more evenly within the fingers and palm of the hand and puts less pressure on individual joints. This enhances grip strength and comfort, minimizes joint fatigue, and reduces the risk of your hand slipping.

Both offer a vertical uninterrupted support with limitless height options, from low to high, for grasping.

The SuperPole and the SuperBar are 1.5” in diameter.  The latex-fee, closed cell foam grip is gentle on painful joints and offers even better grasp and better control.

The uPole and the Pivot Bar are both 1.25” in diameter which may be better for some hands. The U-shaped design of the Pivot Bar offers two heights of horizontal supports and a vertical grip creating flexible, ergonomic positioning for a wide range of upper-extremity needs.

9. Engineered for Stability

The SuperPole is one of the sturdiest poles on the market.  With its one-piece construction for 8 foot ceilings, it is a single, alloy steel pole, with a few inches of adjustability built into the jack screw at the bottom of the pole.  It has a user weight capacity of 300lbs and there is  a Heavy Duty model for up to 450 lbs.

The uPole was purposefully engineered for strength as well as adaptability.  It is fully adjustable to accommodate ceiling heights 7”-10” and offers a user weight capacity up to 300lbs but no heavy duty model.

10. What else sets the SuperPole and uPole apart as a trusted support solutions?

  • The SuperPole offers a range of options and accessories to make it more adaptable to your unique environment. The heavy duty model, the SuperTrapeze to use over the bed, extensions for a 10’ or 12’ ceiling, an angled ceiling plate for vaulted ceilings, and a longer ceiling plate.
  • All SuperPoles come standard with an anti-microbial powder coat paint. This paint actively kill 99.9% of the bacteria and viruses within 2 hours of exposure to the surface and then inhibits the ability of microorganisms to grow and spread for up to six years.
  • The height of the SuperBar can be set anywhere along the vertical pole typically between 24”-38” to meet the unique needs of any client.
  • UPole is fully adjustable to accommodate ceiling heights from 7 to 10 feet
  • UPole has a soft white finish and dome-shaped ceiling mount that blends in with surrounding décor
  • The larger ceiling plate is designed to help distribute load effectively, reducing the need to align with ceiling joists.

I hope this review helps you to choose the support that is right for you.
